Finn Athlete Paleolite Believes
Female Gamers Are Better Strategists
Female Gamers Are Better Strategists

"ZOWIE DIVINA PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) International Women's Invitational Tournament sees advanced 48 athletes from Europe, America, and Asia-Pacific competing on the same grounds after the preliminaries. These players will participate in an offline finals at Shanghai, China from December 13th to 16th, showcasing the most professional women's eSport competition to the world."
Currently residing in Sweden, Finn athlete Paleolite is a member of the U.K.-based exceL eSports team. Having joined eSports from DOTA-type games, she shyly smiles when explaining about her experiences with tournaments: "Before I knew there were tournaments exclusively for girls, I had my hopes up when I took part in the 2012 League of Legends tournament and I was badly beaten... Then I stumbled upon a LoL women's tournament organized by ESL on Facebook and decided to sign up."
As the number of female gamers are on the rise, an assortment of women's eSports tournaments have also begun to surface. Paleolite states, "There's something called Female Legends that was formed around two years ago. It hosts women's only tournaments, and the bi-annual DreamHack also hosts women's only competitions. I believe the preliminary rounds for LoL and CS: GO have already begun, and there are usually some online competitions that we can take part in."
What do her parents or friends think of her decision to pursue eSports? Paleolite laughs, "Actually, I didn't tell my parents or friends at the beginning and just played and took part in competitions in private. After all, there was that stereotype of how games were "for boys only." It wasn't until I began to take part in larger, more famous tournaments and had achieved some positive results that I shared this news with them. But I wasn't exactly alone; I run a live streaming channel, so my fans and friends on my streaming community have also been supporting me."

How did Paleolite begin to run her live stream channel? "I used to watch live videos of advanced LoL gamers, and I thought it was fun to stream. So I wanted to give it a go. But the hardware on my old computer couldn't support live broadcasting. So I bought a new computer and began to run my streaming channel when it 'accidentally drank some coffee' one time." Was it really an accident? Paleolite laughs heartily, "Yes, there's no doubt about that!"
What are her favorite characters in LoL? Paleolite says, "Oh! I usually play Irelia, but I also play Jayce, Katarina, or support as well." So do you have a favorite position? "I usually choose champions that I like more than positions in LoL, so I tend to play with characters I like rather than positions." In your personal experience, is there a difference between the performance of male and female athletes while playing? Paleolite states, "Taking LoL for example, girls usually play supportive roles. But I think this is because of their personality. Most girls tend to protect their teammates and to adopt a more conservative role. They would play defense more than offense. I also started out playing support, but I think compared to guys, girls are more careful and more strategic in game-play."
The reason why Paleolite started to play PUBG, which is distinctively different from LoL, was because her friends wanted to play with her, and she realized just how fascinating PUBG was. It is a new type of game unlike anything she has ever played before. "Though I have played CS:GO and Overwatch before, I think PUBG is different from these games. Especially when I have kept myself alive and entered the finale, I am mesmerized by that feeling of accomplishment and pride." In addition, Paleolite says that she's very fond of using the M24 and Scar while playing PUBG. She laughs, "The sound of an M24 gunshot is the best!"
Having arrived in Shanghai for ZOWIE DIVINA PUBG International Women's Invitational, Paleolite hopes to rank among the top half at least. "I think the overall environment of this tournament, including the equipment, the staff, and the schedule, is excellent. There are also many outstanding female athletes here. I don't have very high hopes for myself, and I only want to finish among the top half, haha!"
